scmp.com

Lebanon and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire after recent clashes across their border resulted in 10 deaths. The fighting has escalated in the past few days, leading to 52 injuries on the Lebanese side alone. The agreement was reached by Lebanon's Defence Minister Michel Menassa and Syria's Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra. They stated that both countries will continue to communicate through military intelligence to avoid further conflict along the border. The region has been tense following the rise of Islamist rebels who recently overthrew Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a supporter of Iran and the Lebanese group Hezbollah. Additionally, Lebanon's Foreign Affairs Minister Youssef Raji met with Syria’s counterpart Asaad al-Shibani in Brussels. They discussed border issues and agreed to keep in touch regarding developments.
