Left-wing extremists on trial for 1995 bomb plot
Two suspected left-wing extremists, Peter K and Thomas W, are on trial in Berlin for a failed bomb attack nearly 30 years ago. They returned from Venezuela after years on the run, reportedly as part of a plea deal. Prosecutors charged them in December with conspiracy to detonate explosives. They allegedly planned to attack a prison for deportees in 1995 but were stopped by police before the attack could occur. The men were tracked down in Venezuela nearly 20 years later. An extradition request was denied, but they later returned to Germany under a plea agreement, according to their lawyer.
