Leominster home demolished after 2023 flooding destruction
A house in Leominster, Massachusetts, known as the Obin house, is set to be demolished this week. The home became a symbol of the severe flooding that struck the area on September 11, 2023. Mayor Dean J. Mazzarella said it is one of the most photographed sites in the state due to the extent of the damage. The flooding caused by a heavy rainstorm led to over 10 inches of rain falling in a short period, turning streets into rivers. Many homes, including the Obin house, suffered severe damage. The Obins, Arthur and Joanne, had to evacuate their home as floodwaters surrounded it, leaving it perched on an exposed foundation. More than a year later, the house still stands in a dangerous state. The front door now overlooks a 20-foot drop, with flood debris scattered around. The Obins have moved to West Boylston after living in the home for nearly 35 years. Their son, Andre, described the past year as extremely stressful for his parents. In March 2024, the city bought the house from the Obins for $350,000, less than its estimated value. Mazzarella noted that the demolition is necessary to prevent further risk, and plans are in place to restore the area afterwards. The flooding caused an estimated $30 million to $35 million in damage to city infrastructure.
