The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks are experiencing a major change as Sean Carey, their longtime coach, retires. Carey has been instrumental in the success of both the men's and women's soccer and futsal teams over his tenure. He first took on the role in 2009, leaving in 2011 and returning again in 2017. During his time, Carey led the teams to impressive victories, including 91 wins in regular-season soccer and 37 in futsal. Notably, he guided the women's team to a bronze medal in 2018 and the men's team to a gold medal in 2019 at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). Carey received numerous accolades, including the ACAC women's Coach of the Year four times and the men's Coach of the Year twice. He also earned national recognition as the men's Coach of the Year from the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Despite these achievements, Carey emphasized that his main focus was on helping student-athletes develop, rather than seeking recognition. Athletic director Todd Caughlin praised Carey's impact, especially in improving the academic performance of the soccer teams. Under Carey's guidance, an average of six student-athletes each season received All Conference and National Academic Honors. Players, like goalkeeper Sammy Demchuk and midfielder Megan Morrison, expressed their gratitude, highlighting how Carey helped them grow both on and off the field. Morrison noted how much effort he put into developing his athletes. In retirement, Carey plans to spend more time on his farm and enjoy golf, but he remains committed to supporting his former teams. He hopes to see his past recruits succeed in their future seasons. The Kodiaks will announce Carey's replacement soon.
