LGBTQ+ families can claim up to $12,300 payment
Aetna, a health care company, has set aside $2 million to settle a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit claimed that Aetna discriminated against LGBTQ+ individuals by denying them access to fertility treatments. Although Aetna did not admit any wrongdoing, the funds are being used to resolve the issue. Eligible members can claim up to $12,300 from this settlement, depending on their situation. To qualify, individuals must have had a claim or precertification request related to artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization between September 1, 2017, and May 31, 2024. There are four categories for eligible claimants. Category A includes individuals who Aetna classified as an LGBTQ+ couple. Category B is for those who were not classified as such due to lack of information. Category C includes those who did not submit claims despite using related services. Category D is for individuals who experienced claim denials that were later reversed. Payments vary by category. Category A members will receive a default payment without needing to file a claim. Category B members must fill out an attestation form to claim their money. Categories C and D require both an attestation form and a claim submission form. Interested individuals have until August 26 to submit their forms for these claims.
