Liam Gamble offers unique Richard III interpretation
Actor Liam Gamble is making his debut as Richard III in a new production by Sport for Jove. Directed by Damien Ryan, this version of the play brings a fresh perspective. Gamble was not familiar with either the historical figure or Shakespeare's character before auditioning. He describes Richard as a “badass” and found his own honesty appealing for the role. Gamble, who has cerebral palsy, offers a different interpretation of Richard. He believes that being himself is more liberating than trying to portray a specific deformity. Ryan appreciates this authenticity, noting it adds depth to the character. The production is part of a larger cycle of Shakespeare's history plays called The Player Kings. In this performance, Gamble approaches Richard's character with vulnerability. Instead of playing for laughs, he portrays a young man desperately seeking love. This adds a powerful layer to the story. Ryan highlights the importance of truthfulness in acting, especially in the opening soliloquy, where Richard reflects on his physical form. Ryan's approach to the cycle of plays is different this time. The cast is older and more experienced, which enriches their performances. Actors like Peter Carroll and John Gaden bring great talent, encouraging others to join the project. The production is divided into segments, allowing audiences to absorb the performances fully. Gamble emphasizes the importance of representation for disabled actors but believes these roles should remain open to all. He is enthusiastic about the chance to portray rich characters. Ryan draws parallels between Shakespeare’s themes and today’s political figures, suggesting these works encourage self-awareness. The Player Kings runs from March 26 to April 5 at the Seymour Centre, featuring a mix of comedy, tragedy, and political themes, showcasing some of Shakespeare's most celebrated characters.
