Libertyville's Shannon Phillips leads soccer defense effectively
Libertyville senior defender Shannon Phillips is making a name for herself in high school soccer. She is inspired by her older brother Andrew, who played a key role in Libertyville's boys soccer team and won awards for his defensive skills. "Watching him grow in the game has inspired me," Shannon said. As she starts her third season for the girls' team, Shannon continues to carry her brother's influence. He supports her, trains with her, and helps her improve her skills. The Wildcats recently kicked off the season with a win against Hersey. Shannon, who is committed to Indiana University for soccer, is one of seven returning starters. Shannon plays a crucial role on the team's defense, especially after the graduation of key players. Her coach, Ian Taylor, praises her composure and leadership on the field. "She keeps the defense organized and is a strong emotional leader," he said. Shannon's calmness allows her to make smart decisions during intense moments in games. Her teammates have recognized her abilities as well. Senior defender Anna George commented on Shannon's talent for staying calm under pressure. This quality helps her avoid rushed decisions and become a reliable defender. Shannon is eager to step up as a leader since she is one of the few returning seniors. Communication is vital for her role as a center back, and she aims to keep her teammates in sync.
