Lions target Kayvon Thibodeaux for defense improvement
The Detroit Lions recently faced a tough end to their 2024 season. They were defeated by the Washington Commanders in the playoffs, highlighting their struggles on defense. A key issue was the lack of a strong pass rush, partly due to the injury of star player Aidan Hutchinson. As the 2025 offseason approaches, the Lions need to improve their defensive lineup. The decision to release Za'Darius Smith has made their situation even more urgent. To address this, Pro Football Focus' Mason Cameron has suggested a significant trade with the New York Giants. Cameron recommends that the Lions pursue Kayvon Thibodeaux, a young edge rusher who was drafted by the Giants in 2022. Thibodeaux has not yet achieved the expected success in New York, having surpassed a 70.0 pass-rush grade only once. However, he showed promise with 11.5 sacks in 2023. Despite facing injuries in 2024, he still managed 5.5 sacks in 12 games. Acquiring Thibodeaux could provide the Lions with a long-term solution to bolster their defense. Detroit has the financial flexibility to sign him, and his contract would likely extend for two years with the fifth-year option. However, the proposed trade is complicated. Giants' general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are under pressure and may be reluctant to part with a key player like Thibodeaux before the season begins. If Thibodeaux becomes available, whether now or later in the year, the Lions are expected to pursue him. This move could be essential for improving their defense and enhancing their chances for future success.
