Liverpool man jailed for 18 months over violent disorder
A 20-year-old man, Corneliu Magureanu, was sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders' institute after getting involved in violent protests in Liverpool. This incident occurred shortly after a tragic stabbing in Southport that claimed the lives of three young girls. Magureanu had finished his early shift at a pub when he found himself in a group throwing rocks at police officers. CCTV footage showed him wearing an England rugby shirt while he watched the chaos unfold. He later admitted to shouting insults at the police and throwing a rock given to him by another person. His mother sobbed in court as he was taken away. She expressed her heartbreak, stating, "I'm not going out. Where is he?" In court, it was revealed that Magureanu felt swept up in the moment and reported having never seen such violence before. His defense lawyer described him as a remorseful young man who contributes positively to his community and church. The judge criticized Magureanu's actions, noting the serious impact of the disturbances on Liverpool's reputation as a welcoming city. The judge concluded that those involved in such violent behavior must face severe consequences.
