Twelve runners participated in the Liverpool Half Marathon today to honor Dan Kay, a former journalist with ECHO who passed away in May 2023. The event raised over £5,800 for the Dan Kay Foundation, which supports mental health training and youth organizations. The foundation was established to carry on Dan Kay's legacy. He worked at ECHO for 18 years and was known for his commitment to social issues, including the Hillsborough justice campaign. He played a central role in covering the tragedy and advocating for justice for the families affected. Among the runners were ECHO Political Editor Liam Thorp and former sportsdesk members. Thorp described Kay as a friendly colleague who helped newcomers feel welcome. He highlighted Kay's dedication to journalism and the impact of his work on the Hillsborough disaster. Thorp, who completed the half marathon, shared that it was a challenging experience but was motivated by thoughts of Dan. He expressed gratitude for the donations received for the foundation. Former ECHO sports editor Sean Bradbury said the event was a wonderful tribute to Dan's memory. Many runners participated to raise funds for causes that mattered to him. Cousin Amos Waldman thanked participants and supporters for their efforts. Thousands gathered at the waterfront for the half marathon, which included both a 13.1 mile run and a shorter 10-mile race. Ian Lawton won the male division of the half marathon, while Lucy Fairclough took the title for women. In the 10-mile race, Paul Edwards and Ellie Hunter emerged as the winners in their respective categories. Congratulations were given to all who took part and contributed to the event's success.
