Lloyd Grant reflects on his overlooked role in early Metallica history
Lloyd Grant, an early guitarist for Metallica, feels overlooked as an original member. He jammed with Lars Ulrich and recorded an early demo of "Hit the Lights" but was not part of the band when it officially formed. Grant explained that he answered an ad from Ulrich before the band had a name. His involvement faded as Ulrich began working with James Hetfield and others, leading to the formation of the full band. Although Grant briefly joined Metallica for their 30th anniversary in 2011, he has not been recognized as an original member. He noted that the band had already found other guitarists by the time he left.
