Local officials hopeful for continued federal grant support
Officials in Waukegan, North Chicago, and Lake County are preparing for the next round of community development block grants from the federal government. These grants help fund important local projects that benefit people in need. One recent project funded by a $60,000 grant improved Besley Park, located near two housing projects for low-income seniors in Waukegan. The park now has fitness equipment and is designed for all ages to enjoy. Ben Richards from the Waukegan Park District said the park offers a space for relaxation and exercise for residents. Funding for these grants comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). However, there are concerns about possible cuts to funding from the new Trump administration. Laraesa Garland, the city’s director for block grants, is worried but continues to manage programs as usual. She plans to apply for as much funding as possible until more information comes from HUD. Waukegan received $1.338 million from the total $4.2 million allocated locally. Lake County got $2.773 million, and North Chicago received $40,000. Officials emphasize the importance of maintaining funding for community services. Matt Meyers, Lake County's deputy administrator, said they are exploring options to support departments reliant on these grants. Garland noted that the program helps with public services, infrastructure, and housing improvements. Grants have aided various organizations, providing funds between $5,000 and $15,000 for projects like a senior living center renovation and a mental health center. Dominic Strezo, the county’s community development administrator, highlighted the contributions of block grant money in enhancing community facilities.
