Locals protest tourism project threatening Old Goa's heritage
Locals in Old Goa gathered for a peaceful protest on Sunday against a new tourism project. They believe the project is within the UNESCO World Heritage Site and threatens the area's cultural heritage. The protest was organized by the Save Old Goa Action Committee. Members of the local panchayat expressed strong opposition to the government's plans. Panchayat member Ambar Amonkar criticized the lack of communication and consultation regarding the project. He mentioned that the proposal was discussed in a village meeting about six months ago, but they have received no updates since. Last week, work on the project began without the panchayat’s approval. Amonkar stated that they would send a stop notice and would not allow any permits for the construction to continue. Congress leader Elvis Gomes joined the protest, showing support for the locals' cause. Activist Fr Bolmax Pereira spoke out against the government's approach, saying, "We are beginning to understand the eyewash and loot that the government is doing in the name of development." The protest concluded with a signature campaign. The gathered signatures will be submitted with a memo to the government, requesting an immediate halt to the project.
