Lok Sabha approves ₹2.52 lakh crore for Indian Railways
On March 18, 2025, the Lok Sabha passed the Demand for Grants for Railways for the year 2025-26, despite disruptions from Opposition protests. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw discussed the budget allocation of ₹2.52 lakh crore, calling it a historic decision. He noted that the Railways has improved its financial position since the challenges posed by COVID-19. Vaishnaw explained that the Railways is now able to cover most of its expenses through income. The main costs include staff salaries, pensions, energy, and financing. He mentioned that while the cost to transport a passenger is ₹1.38 per kilometer, Railways only charges ₹0.71, leading to a government subsidy of ₹60,000 crore annually. The Minister highlighted that railway fares have not increased since 2020 and are among the lowest in the region compared to countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. He addressed concerns about unequal development in states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal, stating that land acquisition remains a significant challenge. Vaishnaw reported a drastic reduction in railway accidents, with current rates showing a 90% decrease from previous years. He also updated the Lok Sabha on rail services planned between Jammu and Srinagar, stating that necessary inspections are complete. Lastly, he compared the progress of Kolkata Metro, which had slow growth over decades, to recent faster developments, and he stressed the importance of ambitious projects for the country's future.
