Long Island students create AI to reduce social media use
A group of ninth graders from Long Island won a contest by creating an AI program called "buddy bot" to help teens reduce social media use. They aimed to address concerns about social media's negative effects on mental health. The students surveyed nearly 350 peers, finding that 60% reported social media harmed their sleep and well-being. Their project includes plans for a "Media Mindful" app, which will incentivize reduced screen time with rewards like pizza parties. The team used their $1,800 prize to develop the app further. They have also started to practice healthier screen habits, reporting improvements in their focus and energy levels.
