LTFRB denies falsifying modernization program data in Philippines
The Land Transport Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in the Philippines has denied claims that it falsified data regarding its Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP). This statement comes after the transport group Manibela resumed its strike on March 21, protesting alleged manipulation of PTMP data. LTFRB spokesperson Ariel Inton answered concerns raised by Manibela. He emphasized that there was no dishonesty in their reports, suggesting that the information may not have been clearly communicated. As of the deadline in November 2024, 86.23 percent, or about 165,334 of the 191,730 public utility vehicles (PUVs), had applied for consolidation under the program. However, Manibela's president, Mar Valbuena, called LTFRB's figures “a complete lie.” He pointed out that the Transportation Secretary, Vince Dizon, admitted that the 86 percent figure included applications still pending approval. Inton clarified that while 86.23 percent have applied, only 43 percent of those have completed the consolidation process. The remaining operators are still working on their applications but are allowed to operate in the meantime. Moreover, Inton mentioned that 26,396 vehicles that have not complied with the regulations are now classified as "colorum," meaning they are operating without a valid franchise. Whether these vehicles will be caught and penalized is up to the Land Transportation Office.
