Authorities in Lucknow are stepping up their efforts to regulate e-rickshaws following a tragic incident involving the alleged rape and murder of a woman by an autorickshaw driver and his brother. The district administration plans to colour-code e-rickshaws based on eight zones defined by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation. This measure aims to improve safety and control over the growing number of e-rickshaws in the city. District Magistrate Vishak G explained that they want all e-rickshaw owners and drivers to register with the Regional Transport Office (RTO). After collecting data, they will assess how many e-rickshaws are needed in each zone and allocate routes accordingly. A lottery system will be used to assign these routes. A committee of five senior officials has been set up to coordinate this initiative. They will help map the e-rickshaws currently operating in various parts of the city. Designated parking areas will be established at the borders of different zones, and e-rickshaws will not be allowed to cross into other zones without permission. The district administration aims to ensure convenient transportation for commuters. For instance, passengers traveling to Charbagh railway station will not need to change vehicles at different zones. The colour-coding will also help traffic police identify e-rickshaws operating outside their assigned routes. An online portal for the lottery will provide transparency, allowing vehicle owners to choose their preferences. Officials believe this plan will reduce traffic issues caused by e-rickshaws. Previous attempts to regulate them were unsuccessful, but they are hopeful for better results this time.
