Ludhiana industry leaders request upgraded R&D centers

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Ludhiana's industry leaders warn that local research and development (R&D) centres need urgent upgrades to boost growth. These centres, originally established to support the bicycle, sewing machine, and auto parts industries, have become mainly focused on testing machinery and issuing licenses. Industry representatives believe that this shift has caused Ludhiana to lose its competitive edge, especially against countries like China. Upkar Singh Ahuja, president of the Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings, emphasized the importance of government support for R&D. He called for a dedicated roadmap and a Rs 10 crore fund to involve top institutions like IITs and international research centres. Ahuja mentioned that Ludhiana’s geographical disadvantages mean the industry can only thrive through innovation and R&D. Without government focus on these areas, growth will be difficult. Amit Jain, chairman of CII Punjab, pointed out that many small businesses can't afford independent R&D and rely on government initiatives. Jain cited Switzerland as an example of a successful economy that thrives on research despite lacking natural resources. He urged the government to engage better institutions and invest in advanced research to fuel industry revenue. Rahul Ahuja from the Apex Chamber of Commerce added that a new growth model is needed. He stated that current R&D facilities primarily serve as testing sites, and there should be more incentives for collaboration and innovation in research.
