Lufthansa Group to use airBaltic's Airbus A220s summer 2025
airBaltic will supply up to 21 Airbus A220 aircraft to Lufthansa Group airlines for the summer 2025 season. This partnership has grown significantly over recent months. The A220s will help the airlines serve routes with lower demand more efficiently. The Airbus A220-300 can carry about 150 passengers and fills a gap between smaller turboprop planes and larger jets. half of airBaltic's active fleet, which consists of 38 A220s. Lufthansa will use its A220s primarily out of Munich, focusing on routes such as Munich to Billund and Gothenburg. Brussels Airlines plans to deploy four A220s from its base in Brussels. The smaller aircraft will help on less busy city routes. They will operate on two daily flights to destinations like Lyon and Venice, with fewer flights to others. Austrian Airlines will operate three A220s, primarily on less frequent routes. The busiest route for them will be from Vienna to Berlin with up to two daily flights. Other routes will include daily services to cities such as Stockholm and London. SWISS has been using airBaltic's A220s since October 2022 and plans to continue this partnership. The airline reports a significant number of flights scheduled with these aircraft, which are essential for maintaining routes. Issues with Pratt & Whitney engines have caused problems for both SWISS and airBaltic, leading to numerous flight cancellations. In addition to the wet lease agreement, Lufthansa has purchased a 10% stake in airBaltic as part of its strategy to expand in Europe.
