M25 Surrey closure starts this weekend; expect delays

Drivers are being warned about the final closure of a section of the M25 in Surrey. The motorway is shut in both directions from junction 10, near Wisley, to junction 11, near Woking. This closure started at 9:00 PM on Friday and will last until 5:30 AM on Monday. The work involves demolishing an old bridge as part of a £317 million project. This project began in 2022 and aims to improve safety and reduce congestion where the M25 meets the A3. National Highways has advised drivers to avoid the area unless their trip is absolutely necessary. The project was initially scheduled to be completed this summer, but now it is pushed back to spring 2026. This delay is due to "periods of extreme weather." In the last closure two weeks ago, traffic was notably heavier compared to earlier closures in 2024. Project manager Jonathan Wade stated that the project is nearing completion. However, he also noted that the final decision about the timetable rests with the Department of Transport. Drivers are advised to plan for extra travel time and use alternative routes. There have been incidents during the closures, including one where a truck driver got stuck after following inaccurate GPS directions. National Highways urges motorists to stick to the official diversion routes during the work.
