M6 in Cumbria to lower speed limit for renovations

express.co.uk

Drivers in the UK are facing extended delays on a section of the M6 motorway. Starting March 31, a lower speed limit will be enforced as National Highways begins work on the Lowther Bridge in Cumbria. This renovation project will last for two years. Sam Whitfield, a Project Manager with National Highways, said the work is essential for maintaining the bridge’s safety. He noted that without these repairs, there could be unexpected closures and delays on this busy motorway. The M6 will stay open, but there will be restrictions between junctions 39 in Shap and 40 in Penrith. During the repairs, the speed limit will drop to 40 mph to protect workers and drivers. There may also be some overnight closures from 10 PM to 6 AM, forcing drivers to take alternative routes. The renovation will include waterproofing the bridge, improving drainage systems, renewing the central safety barrier, and repairing the bridge's structure. Road markings will also be updated to help keep traffic in the correct lanes. In addition to the M6, drivers on the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh should prepare for delays this spring. Work will reduce the motorway to one lane in both directions from late March to mid-May. Other resurfacing projects are also planned on the M8, and drivers are advised to check for updates before traveling.
