Mackenzie discusses trucking industry concerns in Pennsylvania

U.S. Representative Ryan Mackenzie visited the Ward Transport & Logistics terminal in Glendon on Friday. He took a truck-driving lesson in an 18-wheeler and listened to local trucking leaders express their concerns. The trucking industry in Pennsylvania plays a vital role, employing about one in every 15 workers in the state. Leaders from the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association discussed issues like government regulations, tariffs, and infrastructure. PMTA President Rebecca Oyler highlighted the struggles of family-owned businesses, including rising taxes and legal costs. Bill Ward, president of Ward Transport, noted significant increases in wages and insurance rates since 2019. His company, which employs 1,700 people, aims to provide good jobs but faces challenges related to slim profit margins. Mackenzie assured them of his support for small businesses and discussed the need for a balance between industry growth and community quality of life. Parking is also a major issue for truck drivers, with only one parking spot for every 11 drivers. Oyler suggested that new industrial buildings should include designated truck parking. The conversation also included the impact of tariffs on the industry. Ward pointed out that supply chain issues during the pandemic had already strained availability, and new tariffs could complicate matters further. Concerns about emissions regulations were raised as well. Sales of trucks dropped significantly in California after new regulations took effect, and similar regulations in New Jersey are affecting sales there too. Mackenzie mentioned the importance of a practical approach to achieving zero emissions. The American Trucking Association agrees that while moving towards cleaner vehicles is necessary, the pace of change could be too fast and costly for the industry. Mackenzie emphasized the need for careful planning on how to make these transitions effectively.
