Macquarie University law students must deliver Welcome to Country
Law students at Macquarie University in Sydney must deliver a culturally respectful Welcome to Country to pass a key oral exam. This requirement is part of the "Age and the Law" course and counts for 30% of the final grade. Critics, including Indigenous Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, have labeled the exam as "indoctrination," arguing it is unrelated to the course content. This follows the university's recent decision to scrap a controversial module that labeled non-Indigenous students as "visitors" and "settlers." Macquarie University stated that the Welcome to Country is relevant to the course's focus on Indigenous youth and the legal system. This is the only assessment in the unit requiring such an acknowledgment.
