Made-in-India smartphone shipments grew 6% in 2024
Made-in-India smartphone shipments grew by 6% in 2024, according to a new report. This growth was largely driven by strong exports from major companies like Apple and Samsung. Together, they accounted for nearly 94% of all smartphone exports from India. Samsung led the market in India, achieving a 7% year-on-year growth. Vivo came in second, with a notable 14% increase in shipments as they expanded their retail operations. The report highlights the growing importance of these companies in India's electronics sector. Looking ahead, smartphone manufacturing in India is set to increase significantly in 2025. This growth will be due, in part, to more local value addition. Major companies are diversifying production to create a more stable supply chain and reduce risks. Foxconn, which works closely with Apple, reported a 19% increase in manufacturing volumes in India. In contrast, OPPO's shipments fell by 34%, affected by tough competition and reliance on contract manufacturing. Tata Electronics was the fastest-growing manufacturer, with a remarkable 107% increase in production. This surge was fueled by the production of new iPhone models and expansion plans for their facilities. These efforts have made Tata Electronics a key player in the global supply chain. Overall, Dixon Technologies is leading in the broader mobile handset segment, boosted by strong demand for various brands. Experts say India is becoming an attractive manufacturing hub due to its large market, low labor costs, and government support for local production.
