Madison County deputies injured during mental health crisis response
Two sheriff's deputies in Madison County have returned to work after being attacked by a woman in a mental health crisis. The incident happened on March 11 at a home near Colbert. Sheriff’s Captain Jimmy Patton said the officers were lucky the situation did not turn more serious. Sgt. Phillip Hunt was seriously injured, bleeding from cuts on his face and shoulder. He had injuries to his lip, tongue, and thumb. Deputy Wesley Martinez also suffered a small cut on his hand. The woman, 39 years old, called 911 claiming there was an intruder in her home, but she appeared to be talking to herself. When the deputies arrived, they tried to help her. However, the woman pulled out a pocket knife. Hunt attempted to calm her down, but she refused to drop the knife. In a struggle, she stabbed Hunt in the face. Martinez then used a stun gun to subdue her, and they were able to handcuff her afterward. The woman has been charged with two felony assaults and possessing a knife during a crime. Captain Patton reported that both deputies were able to return to work later that week.
