Madurai's sidewalks shrinking for wider carriageways
Pedestrians in Madurai are facing difficulties as sidewalks are shrinking along busy roads. Many shops display their goods on sidewalks, forcing people to walk near the road. This increases the risk of accidents. City planners are widening roads to handle more traffic, further reducing pedestrian space. Recently, work began on Alagarkoil Road to improve traffic flow at two busy junctions. Officials are taking small pieces of land from the Madurai Corporation to adjust sharp turns. This includes removing parts of pedestrian pathways to make it easier for buses to navigate. A traffic police officer explained that this work will help bus drivers turn more easily at certain junctions. However, some fear that the reduced pedestrian space will become a bigger problem as vehicle speeds increase at these turns. One area, Bharathi Ula junction, is particularly concerning. Many people from nearby districts visit the Regional Passport Office there. A wider sidewalk is needed so two people can walk side by side safely. Community members hope the city will prioritize pedestrian safety as road improvements continue.
