Maggie the chimpanzee dies at San Francisco Zoo
Maggie, a famous chimpanzee at the San Francisco Zoo, has died at the age of 55. She was diagnosed with lymphoma and had been receiving palliative care for several months. Maggie was just one month away from her 56th birthday and was known as one of the oldest chimps in the United States. Tanya Peterson, the zoo's CEO, praised Maggie for her role as a matriarch. She helped maintain peace among the chimpanzee group and would step in to lead when necessary. Maggie arrived at the San Francisco Zoo in 1970 when she was just 2 years old, spending over five decades there. During her time at the zoo, Maggie benefited from advancements in animal care and medicine. The zoo's Chief Veterinarian, Adrian Mutlow, indicated that both human and animal cancer specialists participated in her treatment. In memory of Maggie, the zoo plans to support the Jane Goodall Institute. Peterson expressed that Maggie's influence on the zoo and conservation efforts for chimpanzees would always be remembered.
