Maharashtra announces judicial probe into BMC's inaction
The Maharashtra government has decided to set up a judicial probe into the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for its inaction against illegal structures in Mumbai. This announcement came after multiple complaints were raised by lawmakers from different political parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Lawmakers criticized the BMC for failing to hold its officers accountable despite receiving thousands of complaints about illegal constructions. Madhuri Misal, the minister of state for urban development, acknowledged that no action has been taken against these officers. Since March 2022, the BMC has been under the control of administrators rather than elected officials due to delayed elections caused by legal issues. The issue was first highlighted by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sachin Ahir, who claimed there is a close connection between BMC officials and the owners of illegal buildings. He expressed frustration over the lack of enforcement of existing laws and noted that many structures have been taken to court, but few actions have been implemented. Another opposition member, Anil Parab, alleged that large areas of land are being illegally developed with BMC’s knowledge. He attacked the legal department of the BMC, suggesting it protects illegal constructions instead of enforcing regulations. BJP MLC Pravin Darekar echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for accountability among BMC officers. In response, Misal confirmed that no disciplinary actions have been taken against these officials. She acknowledged that there are legal loopholes affecting the handling of illegal structures. Due to the lack of trust in the BMC, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sunil Shinde called for a judicial inquiry. The state's industries minister, Uday Samant, then announced that a committee led by a retired judge will investigate the matter in a timely manner, ensuring accountability for the officers involved.
