Maharashtra council revises vehicle tax hike bill proposal
Maharashtra's legislative council has sent a bill back to the state assembly to increase motor vehicle tax. This happened after opposition members raised concerns about certain changes in the bill, especially regarding electric vehicle tax. The bill aims to impose a 6% tax on electric vehicles (EVs) that cost over ₹ 30 lakh. It also proposes to raise taxes on private vehicles powered by CNG and LPG by 1%. State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik presented the bill and asked the council to pass it. Opposition members were allowed to voice their concerns. Independent MLC Satyajeet Tambe called for the removal of the 6% tax on high-end EVs, arguing that it places an unnecessary burden on buyers. Shiv Sena’s Anil Parab also stated that the bill goes against the central government’s efforts to promote electric vehicles. Other council members criticized the tax increase on CNG vehicles, including minibuses that help transport students, as well as on two- and three-wheelers. In defense of the bill, Sarnaik noted that it is expected to raise ₹ 1,500 crore for the state. He clarified that there would be no tax on smaller vehicles, only on the more expensive ones.
