Maharashtra council supports Neelam Gorhe amid controversy

On March 19, 2025, the Maharashtra Legislative Council passed a resolution supporting Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe. This decision came after Gorhe faced criticism from the Opposition for comments she made about Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray. The resolution was introduced by BJP Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Pravin Darekar. It was accepted by Chairperson Ram Shinde and approved through a voice vote. Opposition MLC Anil Parab objected to the vote, claiming his right to speak was not respected. This led to a heated exchange, prompting Chairperson Shinde to pause the proceedings for 15 minutes. Just a day earlier, on March 18, Shinde had dismissed an Opposition no-confidence motion aimed at Gorhe. He stated that the motion did not follow proper legal procedures. This motion arose after Gorhe's remarks about the value of “Mercedes cars for posts in Shiv Sena (UBT).”
