Maharashtra minister acknowledges poor food in student hostels
The Social Justice Minister of Maharashtra, Sanjay Shirsat, has acknowledged that the food quality in state-run hostels for poor students is inadequate. This department manages 443 hostels, housing over 43,000 students, both male and female. During a discussion in the state assembly, Shirsat promised improvements. He stated that his department would ensure better grades and brands for essential food ingredients like rice, wheat, and pulses. Additionally, he announced plans to create 25,000 more hostel spots. The issue of poor food and inadequate facilities was highlighted by opposition leader Ambadas Danve. He raised concerns about a specific hostel in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. In response, Shirsat revealed that the hostel's chief had been suspended and a penalty imposed on the cleaning company. A budget of ₹ 5 crore has been approved for repairs. Shirsat admitted that during surprise checks, officials found low-quality food being served at many hostels. He emphasized that this is unacceptable. The department will take action to improve conditions and is planning to establish around 125 new hostels statewide, with a budget of ₹ 1,500 crore. To facilitate easier access for students, the minister announced a change in the admissions process. Instead of being managed at the state level, it will now be handled locally, making it simpler for students to secure places in hostels closer to their colleges.
