Maharashtra plans to reclaim encroached temple lands
The Maharashtra government plans to reclaim private and temple lands that have been illegally occupied by the Waqf Board. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule made this announcement during a session in the Legislative Assembly on Friday. He explained that the government is working on legal changes to address this issue. Bawankule responded to concerns raised by several MLAs, assuring them that any encroached lands would be taken back. A special committee has been formed to oversee the situation. This committee will include members from temple trusts to ensure a thorough review. The minister noted that the government aims to categorize temple lands as ‘Category 1' properties throughout Maharashtra. This approach has already been adopted in regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada. He also stated that the cabinet discussed returning land to farmers in Marathwada, but this will require legislative approval. Concerns about illegal constructions on temple properties in areas like Nagpur and Kolhar were raised in the Assembly. Bawankule promised to introduce stricter laws to prevent further encroachments. Local administrations and police have been instructed to act against unauthorized structures. The discussion also highlighted land ownership disputes in Jiwati taluka, where about 33,480 hectares of land are contested. Bawankule vowed to arrange a meeting with various officials to ensure a swift resolution and support for affected farmers.
