Maharashtra proposes electronic tracking for foreign drug offenders
The Maharashtra government is considering a new plan to track foreign nationals who are on parole in drug-related cases. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced this idea during a session in the legislative assembly. He highlighted that drug issues are growing in the state. Fadnavis explained that drug dealers used to work mostly in person, but now they often use the internet, especially the darknet, to sell drugs. They place orders online and have drugs sent through courier services. He noted that authorities have already begun checking courier offices for suspicious activities. The chief minister pointed out that the government is closely monitoring Nigerian drug peddlers and others involved in illegal drug sales. However, these individuals cannot be deported until their legal cases are resolved. To address the problem, Fadnavis mentioned that there is a legal provision allowing the electronic tracking of individuals on parole or furlough. The government is currently examining if this electronic tracking can be applied to foreign nationals accused in drug cases. Additionally, Fadnavis, who is also the home minister, warned that any police officers linked to drug activities would face dismissal. He indicated that seven police personnel in Pune have already been suspended for such involvement.
