Maharashtra reservoirs' water storage declines amid rising temperatures
Maharashtra's major reservoirs have seen a 7% drop in water storage over the past 15 days, now holding 58% of their total capacity. This decline is attributed to rising temperatures, increased evaporation, and higher water consumption. Last year, the reservoirs had 60% capacity at this time, indicating a worsening situation. In 2022, the level was even higher at 65%. The current trend raises concerns about potential water scarcity as summer progresses. Despite the overall decline, the Koyna Hydroelectric Project is at full capacity, helping to meet rising electricity demand. However, eight reservoirs are below 10% capacity, prompting authorities to consider water conservation measures.
