Maharashtra sees sharp decline in vasectomies as urban men avoid procedure

In Maharashtra, vasectomies remain significantly low, with only 4,407 performed in 2024-25 until November, compared to 1.74 lakh tubectomies. This represents just 0.86% of total family planning procedures, highlighting a persistent gender gap in sterilization. Men from urban areas are less likely to undergo vasectomies, while those from underdeveloped districts lead in numbers. Major cities like Pune reported only 165 vasectomies, with several civic bodies recording none at all. The percentage of vasectomies has declined over the years, from 2.6% in 2021-22 to 0.86% in 2024-25. Myths about masculinity and misconceptions about the procedure continue to deter men from choosing this family planning option.
