Maharashtra surveys RMC plants for pollution compliance
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has started a survey to check ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The survey aims to ensure these plants follow pollution control rules. It began on Friday after residents protested about air pollution from RMC plants nearby. Jay Shankar Salunkhe, a regional officer for MPCB, mentioned that inspectors have already visited areas like Sinhagad Road, Hinjewadi, and Wagholi. Currently, they are focusing on city areas, but they plan to extend inspections to rural locations next. Salunkhe acknowledged that the MPCB is short-staffed but is using its available resources effectively. Last week, the MPCB issued show-cause notices to four RMC plants—two each in Wakad and Thergaon—after complaints from local housing societies. Residents have called for the relocation of these plants to reduce pollution in their neighborhoods. Salunkhe said the MPCB is ensuring that the plants comply with pollution norms and are using water sprinklers to control dust. He added that local bodies, like the Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, have started spraying water on roads around these plants. This is intended to reduce dust pollution, which can be cut by about 60% if done correctly. However, he encouraged them to increase the frequency of water spraying, recommending at least five times a day on key routes. An MPCB official stated that they will take action against plant owners if they do not follow pollution rules. Repeat offenders may face closure of their plants. Earlier this month, residents in Wakad expressed their frustration with air quality by organizing a protest. They highlighted that RMC plants are located very close to their homes, leading to dust and pollution from construction activities.
