Mahmoud Khalil remains detained in Louisiana for deportation case
Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil will stay in a Louisiana detention center as a judge reviews arguments from his lawyers and government attorneys regarding his deportation. A hearing on Wednesday led to a request for more legal briefs. Judge Jesse Furman allowed Khalil to have privileged calls with his lawyers, who have been unable to contact him since his arrest. The judge also noted that the case's jurisdiction is based on where Khalil was when his lawyers filed their petition. Khalil, 30, was detained by Homeland Security agents after returning home from a dinner. He is a green card holder and has been involved in protests against U.S. policies regarding Israel and Palestine.
