Major volcanic eruption strikes Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland
A new volcanic eruption has occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, marking the seventh since December 2023. The eruption began at 00:14 CET near Sundhnúkagígar and has created a 3-kilometre fissure. Authorities have warned of gas emissions, especially in Grindavík, where previous eruptions have caused property damage and relocations. However, they state that air traffic is not expected to be affected and that Reykjavik remains safe. The Reykjanes Peninsula has seen increased volcanic activity since 2021, with the last eruption on August 23. This area had been quiet for eight centuries before the recent eruptions began.
