Majority of Utah voters support recreational marijuana legalization
A recent poll shows that more than half of Utah voters support legalizing recreational marijuana. The survey, done by Noble Predictive Insights, revealed that 52% of respondents favor an initiative to legalize cannabis for all purposes, including recreational use. This marks a slight increase from last October when 50% supported legal cannabis. Support for recreational marijuana is strongest among younger voters. About 59% of those aged 18-29 and 61% of those aged 30-44 back legalization. In contrast, opposition is highest among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and conservative voters. The poll reflects growing interest in cannabis legislation following recent discussions in the state legislature. A bill aimed at regulating the medical cannabis industry faced significant opposition but passed the House. Some provisions from that bill were added to another bill that has now reached the governor. Despite the poll's promising results for proponents of legalization, experts warn that organized resistance could pose challenges. The pollsters note that traditionalist groups in Utah may mobilize against legalization efforts, which could sway public support. Overall, this poll suggests that Utah could be on the verge of changing its laws on marijuana, but opposition is likely to remain strong.
