Maldives government faces criticism for stifling media freedom
The government of the Maldives, led by President Muizzu, is facing criticism for limiting media freedom. The online news portal Adhadhu has published many stories that criticize the government. These stories highlight issues like corruption and bad governance since Muizzu took office. Recently, tensions escalated when the president allegedly threatened the CEO of Adhadhu, Hussain Fiyaz Moosa. This threat came after the media outlet reported comments targeting Muizzu's son made by an opposition activist during a protest. The president's wife has denied these allegations and has taken legal action against the activist. In response to the threats, Adhadhu filed a complaint with the Maldives Police Service against Muizzu. Journalist associations, including the Maldives Journalist Association and the International Federation of Journalists, have condemned the threats. They are calling for a transparent investigation into the president's actions. The International Federation of Journalists emphasized the importance of protecting journalists and urged law enforcement to act quickly. They also called for the President's Office to clarify the situation, emphasizing that intimidation of journalists is unacceptable.
