Maliki urges opposition to present plans for East Coast
In Singapore, East Coast MP Maliki Osman has invited opposition parties to share their proposals with local residents. He emphasized that this would help voters make informed choices ahead of the upcoming election. Dr. Maliki, who also serves in the Prime Minister’s Office, stated that every citizen should have the right to decide. Dr. Maliki discussed the "East Coast Plan," which the People's Action Party (PAP) first introduced last election. This plan aims to build a caring, green, and vibrant East Coast. He highlighted improvements in infrastructure over the past five years, including a new community club that opened in 2023. The PAP has also launched various social programs to support residents, such as services for young families and the elderly. The rising cost of living is a major concern for many residents. Dr. Maliki said the government is aware of these issues and has rolled out initiatives like the Assurance Packages and Community Development Council vouchers to help families. He expressed commitment to understand and assist the needs of East Coast residents. Recently, Dr. Maliki attended an event at the Siglap Community Club, where 60,000 Hari Raya cookies were distributed to 1,000 low-income Malay-Muslim families. This initiative was supported by over 250 volunteers from different wards, showcasing community spirit and compassion. One beneficiary, Nur Deena Mardiana, thanked Dr. Maliki for the support. She lives in a two-room flat with her husband and five children, and she expressed hope for more government assistance, especially as her youngest children still need milk and diapers. Regarding potential candidates for East Coast GRC, Cheryl Tan from the PAP stated that it is too early to speculate on new politicians. Decisions will come from the PAP headquarters. Dr. Maliki welcomed the idea of involving other ministers, like Edwin Tong, if designated, but stressed that any politician must focus on fulfilling the needs of the residents.
