Mamdani criticized for accepting real estate donations
Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate for mayor, is facing criticism for accepting donations from real estate executives. He had promised not to take money from wealthy real estate developers, yet reports show his campaign has received $3,700 from them. Among the contributors is Mohannad Malas, who leads Dana Investment Corp., giving $1,000. Another $150 came from Joseph Riggs, a principal at Hudson Companies, which is known for several major New York projects. Smaller amounts were also donated by Matthew Hopkins and Eric Volpe. Critics accuse Mamdani of hypocrisy. They argue that despite his rhetoric against big-money influences, these donations suggest otherwise. A prominent Democratic strategist noted that while he may not attract the same level of funding as some other candidates, the real estate contributions reveal a lack of sincerity. In contrast, fellow socialist candidate Brad Lander, who is also running for mayor, has committed to rejecting funds from executives of for-profit real estate firms. He returned a donation from Riggs shortly after receiving it. Mamdani's total campaign funds amount to $3.67 million, slightly less than Lander's $3.74 million. Both candidates have used small donations and public matching funds to boost their campaigns. A spokesperson for Mamdani stated they plan to refund donations that were questioned, as they are still reviewing the over 17,000 contributions received.
