Man arrested after six-hour standoff in Ellesmere Port

A man will appear in court after a six-and-a-half hour standoff with police. The incident occurred on Wellington Road in Ellesmere Port on March 17. Emergency services were called around 9:40 AM after worries were raised about the man's wellbeing while he was in a car. Multiple police cars, ambulances, and a fire engine were dispatched to the scene. A police negotiator worked to communicate with the man inside the vehicle. After roughly seven hours, the man exited the car and was arrested around 4 PM. Witnesses reported hearing shouts of "love you, Dad" as he was taken into custody. The man, identified as Carl Edwards from Girton Road, faces charges of causing public nuisance and possessing an item intended for damaging property. He has been released on bail and is expected in Chester Magistrates' Court on April 8. Cheshire Police confirmed they were called to the area at 9:42 AM and managed to conclude the situation safely. The Portal building was closed to the public during the operation to ensure safety.
