Man guilty of first-degree murder in Surrey shooting
A man has been convicted of first-degree murder in connection with a shooting at a gas station in Surrey, British Columbia, in 2019. The victim, 29-year-old Kristijan Coric, was shot while sitting in his vehicle at a gas station in the Cloverdale neighborhood on September 28. Police described the shooting as a targeted attack. Hours after the incident, a burning car believed to be the getaway vehicle was found in Burnaby. Carlos Nathaniel Monteith was arrested in October 2020. At that time, he was already in custody for an unrelated crime. Monteith, born in 1995, was found guilty of first-degree murder last week. The trial began on February 3 and involved lengthy court proceedings. A first-degree murder conviction results in an automatic life sentence, and Monteith will not be eligible for parole for 25 years. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team expressed their commitment to justice. They announced Monteith is scheduled to return to court on March 27 for sentencing.
