Man sentenced for breaking victim's jaw in Derry

A man has received a suspended sentence and a fine after seriously hurting another man in a bar. Marc Mukendi, 37, from Grangemore Park in Londonderry, was found guilty of assault causing grievous bodily harm. The incident happened on January 13 last year. It started with friendly interactions but quickly turned violent. Mukendi headbutted the victim, resulting in severe injuries to his jaw and voice box. District Judge Barney McElholm expressed concern over the significant damage caused. He noted that it was unclear how the situation escalated so dramatically from friendly to violent. Mukendi was given a 12-month prison sentence, which is suspended for three years. He was also ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to the victim. The judge highlighted the importance of this penalty, stressing the seriousness of Mukendi's actions.
