Man sentenced for leading violent attack in Dublin
A man has been sentenced to prison for leading a violent attack on another man in Dublin city center. Wayne Gilligan, 29, pleaded guilty to violent disorder for his role in the incident that occurred on May 8, 2023. Gilligan was part of a group of six men who attacked the victim late at night on Euston Street. He was the first to strike, hitting the victim multiple times and kicking him while he was on the ground. Others in the group also participated in the assault, with one using a bladed weapon that appeared to be a machete. CCTV footage showed the attack, and the men fled the scene afterward. The victim was found by police on South Great George's Street and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He had deep cuts on his head and finger, but he refused to cooperate with the police or provide a victim impact statement. Gilligan has a lengthy criminal record with 137 previous convictions. He is currently in custody and will be eligible for release no earlier than August 2027. The court noted he was the only one identified from the group and that he did not use a weapon during the attack. During the court proceedings, his defense lawyer highlighted Gilligan's efforts to address his addiction issues. He is currently engaged in prison programs, including anger management and maintaining a clean record. Judge Martin Nolan acknowledged the severity of Gilligan's actions, stating that the reasons for the attack remain unclear. After considering all factors, the judge sentenced Gilligan to four years and three months in prison, rejecting calls to reduce his time behind bars.
