Man sentenced for years of abuse in St Helens
A man from Leeds has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for abusing a woman for several years. Robert Rawson, 62, was found guilty of controlling and coercive behavior, as well as tampering with justice. Rawson's actions included preventing the victim from communicating with her family. He also controlled her phone, money, and movements. In public, he pulled her clothes down and posted intimate images of her online. His behavior caused severe emotional distress to the victim and impacted her child as well. The sentencing took place at Liverpool Crown Court on March 24. In addition to his prison term, Rawson received a 15-year restraining order to keep him away from the victim. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of support for domestic abuse victims. Detective Inspector Steven O’Neill stated that coercive and controlling behaviors are unacceptable. He encouraged victims to seek help and reassured them that police will treat their reports seriously. For those in immediate danger, they are urged to call 999. If it's unsafe to speak, they can cough or tap the phone to signal for help. There are also resources available for inquiries about past violence, as well as information on support services.
