Man sentenced to life for 2008 sister murders
A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of two sisters in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The crime occurred in June 2008, shocking the local community. Majibur Rahman, also known as Atabur Rahman, was convicted by a sessions court on Monday. He was found guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and ordered to pay a fine of ₹20,000. The case took more than 11 years to resolve, as Rahman escaped from police custody in 2012. He evaded capture for over a decade, changing his identity and moving between different states, including Kerala and Karnataka. The police, led by SP Rohit Rajbir Singh, finally tracked him down in January 2025. Singh praised his team for their hard work in bringing Rahman to justice. Before the murders, Rahman had a history of criminal activity, including multiple thefts. He had been involved with a gang that committed crimes in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
