Mandatory sex education proposed for 18-year-olds' safety
An independent MP has proposed making sex education mandatory for 18-year-olds to help them recognize unhealthy and abusive relationships. Zarah Sultana of Coventry South stressed the importance of this education, particularly for students in sixth forms and further education colleges. She believes that without proper guidance, young people may turn to harmful influences. During a discussion in the House of Commons, Ms. Sultana referred to a tragic incident involving the murder of three family members by an ex-partner. She stated that such violence highlights the dangers of not providing young people with reliable education about healthy relationships. Ms. Sultana's amendment to the Government's Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill aims to fill the educational gap for post-16 students. She explained that this age is crucial as many begin exploring intimate relationships, making it essential for them to understand issues like coercive control and domestic abuse. She also encouraged people to watch the Netflix drama "Adolescence," which illustrates the importance of proper relationship education. Ms. Sultana argued that without this education, young people are at risk of manipulation and abuse. Her proposal seeks to empower young people by giving them tools to identify unhealthy relationships and understand where to seek help. She believes that education on these topics is not just essential but can be lifesaving.
