M&M Bake Shop in Cumberland closes after 60 years

M&M Bake Shop, a beloved bakery in downtown Cumberland, has closed its doors after nearly 60 years of service. The bakery, located on Baltimore Street, was opened in 1966 by Mary Lantz and later taken over by her son, Roger Lantz, in 1973. Roger has decided to retire and sell the building. The community showed strong support when the bakery announced a temporary closure on March 13. Many residents expressed their gratitude online, thanking the bakery for its years of service. Local banks even offered to help set up a retirement fund for Roger Lantz as a way to give back for his contributions. Over the years, M&M Bake Shop had built a reputation for generosity, donating treats to local fire and police departments as well as participating in fundraisers. Roger Lantz mentioned that he often brought extra doughnuts to the local emergency services. Lantz said it was the right time for him to retire. After more than 50 years of working in the bakery, aging equipment, and advice from his doctor, he feels ready to slow down. Many of the bakery's original ovens are becoming costly to repair, making it harder to keep the business running. The bakery has been a family affair, starting with Roger's mother, Mary, who created many of the recipes still in use. Both Roger and his wife, Elizabeth, have fond memories of learning from her. Their two daughters also worked at the bakery during their upbringing. As they prepare to move on, the Lantzes said they hope to sell the building by summer. They will cherish the relationships built with customers and friends over the years. To support their retirement, donations can be made at any M&T Bank branch by mentioning the M&M Bakery Retirement Fund.
